Health Benefits of CBD Oil

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is an active ingredient that is derived from the cannabis plant. It is not a psychoactive compound, made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant and diluting it with a carrier oil like hemp seed oil or coconut oil.

CBD oil also works as a natural remedy for many common health concerns. This is a great option for those who are looking for relief from pain and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of cannabis or other side effects related to some pharmaceutical drugs. It continues to gain strength in the health and wellness world for relieving chronic pain and anxiety.

There is a variety of Cannabis products online and in local store that contains CBD like dietary supplements, bath soaks, drinks, and food.

Let’s take a look at the health benefits of CBD oil:

May relieve pain

Cannabis has been used to treat chronic pain since ancient times. More recently, scientists have researched that certain components that are found in the cannabis plant including CBD have pain-relieving benefits.

In our body, a specialized system named the endocannabinoid system is found which regulates different types of functions like the immune system, pain sensation, sleep, and appetite. Endocannabinoids work as neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system.

Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain by affecting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation, and interacting with neurotransmitters.

Some research also suggests that CBD may be effective for certain types of pain, including nerve pain and back pain, when used on its own but it is more effective when combined with THC.

Also, several studies on humans have found that a combination of CBD and THC is effective in treating pain-related diseases like MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and arthritis. In a review, it is noted that CBD may benefit those who are suffering from severe neuropathic pain. CBD oil also helps in relieving anxiety and stress. Some research also tells that CBD may relieve symptoms of rheumatic diseases such as fibromyalgia.

However, more studies and research are needed to determine its effectiveness as a pain reliever.

May reduce certain cancer-related symptoms

CBD may help in alleviating some cancer-related symptoms and side effects that are usually caused by cancer treatment like nausea, vomiting, and pain. In an older study, it is found that the effects of CBD and THC in people with cancer-related pain who did not experience relief from pain medication.

The people who are treated with an extract containing both compounds experienced a significant reduction in pain compared with those who received only THC extract.

Although CBD finds helpful for some people with cancer, more research is needed to determine whether CBD should be used more regularly in cancer symptom management.

If you have cancer and are interested in using CBD or other cannabis-derived products, it’s important to consult your healthcare team.

Prevent Arthritis Symptoms

In Arthritis, the tissues in and around your joints lose their strength. There are different types of arthritis and their symptoms like pain, stiffness, and loss of motion. Arthritis treatment usually targets pain relief and improved joint function.

A 2006 study found that a CBD-based botanical drug approved in the United Kingdom in 2010- promoted statistically significant improvements in quality of sleep, pain during movement, and pain at rest in patients with rheumatoid arthritis when compared to a placebo. It was the first controlled trial of Sativex as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis on 58 patients. CBD was found to have a pain-relieving effect as well as the ability to suppress disease activity.

May Reduce Symptoms related to some mental health disorders

Anxiety disorders and any other mental health disorders can impact a person’s overall health and well-being.

Usually, mental health disorders are treated with pharmaceutical drugs, which can cause several side effects including drowsiness, agitation, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, and headaches.

CBD oil may act as a treatment for some mental health disorders like anxiety disorder. In a study, the researchers found that a 300-mg dose of CBD was the most effective to reduce anxiety during the test.

CBD oil also treats insomnia and anxiety in children who have PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). A small 2019 study also found that CBD was effective in reducing PTSD-related symptoms, including nightmares in adults.

Even though some people have experienced that CBD improves symptoms related to depression, human evidence of CBD’s potential antidepressant abilities is currently limited.

May benefit heart health

Some research has shown that CBD is beneficial for the heart and circulatory system and also can lower high blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause many health conditions like stroke, heart attack, and metabolic syndrome.

In a study, 9 healthy men were treated with 600 mg of CBD oil, which reduced resting blood pressure compared with a placebo. The men also took part in stress tests that normally increase blood pressure. Interestingly, the single dose of CBD led the men to experience a smaller blood pressure increase than normal in response to these tests.

Another study also includes 26 healthy men and found that treatment with 600 mg of CBD for 7 days led to a significant reduction in blood pressure in the short term compared with a placebo group. However, the effect was lost after 7 days.

In a research, it is also found that the CBD group had reduced arterial stiffness and improved blood flow through their arteries after repeated CBD dosing compared to the placebo group.

These data are encouraging, but still, we need more studies on the potential benefits of CBD treatment on heart health.

Potential benefits of CBD Oil

CBD has been studied for its role in treating many health issues other than those described above.

  • Improve Sleep- some studies suggest that CBD might help improve sleep in people with certain sleep disorders, however, more research is needed.
  • Relieve anxiety and depression- CBD may help relieve anxiety and depression in people.
  • Antipsychotic effects- studies also suggest that CBD may help people with schizophrenia and other mental health conditions by reducing symptoms of psychosis.
  • Possible extension of life in those with glioblastoma- some studies, it has shown that a combination of CBD and THC may help extend the life of some people with an aggressive form of cancer called glioblastoma. Yet more research is needed.

Bottom Line:

CBD oil may help in easing the symptoms of many common health conditions, including neurological and anxiety disorders, and also may benefit heart health and relieve certain types of pain.

All of these health benefits are related to the use of CBD combined with THC, not CBD alone.

Research investigating the effects of CBD on certain conditions is ongoing, and there is still much to be needed to know the potential uses of CBD.
